Lift Patient Handling Systems The O'Shea No Lift Patient Handling System has revolutionized
the way patients are handled in Australian health care facilities.
The system was developed in 1995 to combat the unacceptably
high injury rates to health care workers involved in moving
and handling patients and materials.
It has now been successfully implemented into more than 300
diverse facilities throughout Australia from nursing homes
to acute care pediatric hospitals. Ninety percent of the state
government hospitals in Victoria, Australia use this cost
effective system. It has been endorsed by the prestigious
Australian Royal College of Nursing.
Since its widespread implementation, Australian medical
institutions have seen a significant reduction in health
care risks to their employees.
What makes the O'Shea System so effective is its ability
to quickly achieve the cultural change necessary to integrate
a "no lift" policy into daily operations.
The O'Shea System is designed to be customized to any health
care setting and to varying levels of governmental and institutional
regulations.
It addresses the organizational, environmental, staff and
patient risk factors associated with patient handling with
a tailored comprehensive program that moves the facility from
training to accepted work practice.
The O'Shea System has two components:
1. Documentation which supports the system
2. Training and consultancy services to implement and maintain
the system within the facility
The system is based on the following basic principles:
" Maximize patient independence
" Work close to the patient's body
" Minimize forward and lateral movements and twisting
" Push/pull rather than lift
" Use the bed mechanics
" Use the patient's body movement
" Use weight transfer techniques
